Goods and properties worth millions of naira were on Monday razed by fire at Abakpa main market in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital. The fire which started at about 3:00am, it was gathered, destroyed over 16 shops, most of them electrical shops and warehouses behind the building.
The electrical shops destroyed are filled with assorted goods such as, computers, television, generator sets and sterilizers. Also affected were curtain dealers’ shops housing bundles of curtains, curtain rods, roll carpets and ray.

One of the victims, Aaron Onuorah, who lamented the level of destruction, said the incident took everybody by surprise. Onuorah, a journalist with National Light Newspaper, said he lost goods worth over N6 million to the inferno that razed his electronics shop.
Also tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday last week when an 80-year-old man, Pa Sylvanus Nwefuru lost his wife and seven children in an early morning mysterious fire at Ohufu village, Ogboji community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Nwefuru and his only surviving daughter, Ukamaka, were the only people who survived the inferno when the two thatched houses they were sleeping in were gutted by mysterious fire in the early hours of Friday, resulting in the deaths of the eight members of the family.
