Customs intercepts container with live ammunition from US

Customs intercepts container with live ammunition from US

The Tin-Can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a 40 ft. container with 980 rounds of 9mm type live ammunition and a pistol imported into the country from the US. Chris Osunkwo, public relations officer (PRO) of the command, made the disclosure in a statement made available to reporters on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Bashar Yusuf, area controller of the command, said the ammunition including a camouflage military face cap, camouflage belt, a pair of hand gloves and a pair of shoes were concealed along with other personal effects in two vehicles. Yusuf said the arms and ammunitions and a suspect who was arrested in connection with the seizure, had been handed over to the Department of State Security Service (DSS) for further investigation.

“A 40 ft container with number CLHU452754/2 with these items have been seized and it is with us and we are transferring them as appropriate to the relevant agency,” the statement quoted Yusuf as saying.

“The items were concealed because nobody can just import these things without full authorisation to do that. No unauthorised passenger or trader should trade in arms and ammunition all over the world. It is not allowed. “You have to go through due process; authorisation with permit, before you move even one piece across the border of another country.

“The suspect is with the directorate of state security service for further investigation so that we will get the full details of how he came about these items as well as if there are collaborators within Nigeria or outside Nigeria. “It is within their purview to do that.” James Udo, officer-in-charge of DSS at Tin Can Island Port, explained the danger such importation could have on members of the public, if it had escaped customs’ attention. Udo said security must be a collective responsibility. He said the DSS would conduct further investigation on the importation to unravel those behind it.

Saved by charity… Foreigner saves Nigerian child abandoned after being accused of being a Wizard

Saved by charity… Foreigner saves Nigerian child abandoned after being accused of being a Wizard

Nigeria has recently been prominent in the international media for all sorts of reasons. This time around, it is not about the economy; it is about the rejection of a two-year-old boy for alleged witchcraft. New York Times, Huffington Post, Telegraph, The Independent, Mirror of London and many others are reporting the country for the decision of a Nigerian family to reject a child believed to be a witch.

Anja Ringgren Loven, the Danish woman who saved the little boy, has been able to raise $1 million for his road to recovery. The boy, who was named Hope by Loven, was left to feed off road-side junk thrown at him by passers-by for eight months in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state. Putting up a post about Hope’s rescue, Loven lamented that thousands of children in Nigeria were being accused of witchcraft in the country, leading her to sell all her belongings to care for them.

I’ve seen much here in Nigeria over the last 3 years. I have spared you for many experiences when we’ve been on the rescue operations,” she said. “Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we’ve both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children. This footage shows why I fight. Why I sold everything I own.

Hope Recuperating

“Why I’m moving out in uncharted territory. Why the new documentary is so important for dinnødhjælps work so we can shout world leaders up so we can get focused on superstition in Nigeria!”

With Hope recuperating, Loven expressed hope that he survives, and shared pictures of his gradual recovery before seeking funds to support his medical bills. “I hope you will all see with when Anja Africa is being shown on TV. Together we can make the biggest difference.

I have chosen to call the boy ‘Hope’, for right now, we all hope that he survives. “He is in the hospital and you guys want to support Hope with medicine and hospital bills as you daily pay for hospitalization here in Nigeria, [you] can make a contribution on dinnødhjælps mobilepay: 27 21 24 34”. She appreciated Danes, who had “donated about $1 million” for the child, saying “where there is love, there is life”. She also appreciated another child in the orphanage for keeping him with smiles.

Supreme Court gives reasons for upholding Wike’s election as Rivers Governor.

Supreme Court gives reasons for upholding Wike’s election as Rivers Governor.

The supreme court has come up with reasons behind its Rivers election verdict that affirmed the election of Nyesom wike as the validly elected governor of the state
INFO 247 PLUS reports that the crux of the judgment is that the trial tribunal and the lower appeal court were wrongly swayed by INEC guideline on the use of card readers for the election.

The court also said that the trial tribunal denied Wike fair hearing when it was hearing the petition.
It held that while it commends INEC for the introduction of card readers, the innovation, however, cannot supersede the voters register.
The court said that extant laws of the federation provides for the use of voters register but the card reader irrespective of its importance does not have a place in any extant law of the land.
Hence it said that the tribunal was wrong to base it judgment on non compliance with the use of card readers.
It advised INEC to approach the National Assembly for an amendment to incorporate the use of card readers in the law of the land.
On the issue of allegation of violence and hijacking, the court held that Dakuku was not able to prove beyond reasonable doubt because he failed to bring in witnesses from all the polling units to substantiate the claims.
The court also held that for Peterside to prove non accreditation, he ought to have tendered the voters register and then demonstrate it.
The court said that the voters register could not be jettisoned for the card reader because it has a place in law while the card reader doesn’t.
The court also held that the tribunal and the lower court were unduly swayed by INEC’s directive on card reader usage during the election, adding that it cannot supersede the voters register.
However, the court while noting that INEC is empowered to make subsidiary regulations as regards election, said the regulations must not go contrary to constitutional provisions.
On the evidence of INEC staff known as PW40 who described the election as a shame and a mockery of democracy, the court held that his evidence cannot take the place of voters as he himself under cross examination did not say that he personally witnessed any violence but depended on hearsay.
Finally the court held that to warrant nullification of an election, a petitioner has to prove that there was substantial non-compliance in all polling units, adding that they failed to bring the issue within this parameter.
The court commended INEC for its innovation of the smart card readers but was quick to add that validation of voting process through the use of voters register takes precedent over any other process for now.

How teenage suicide bomber refuses to blow herself up in IDP camp

How teenage suicide bomber refuses to blow herself up in IDP camp

A teenage girl equipped with an explosive vest by Boko Haram terrorists has ripped off her vest, refusing to participate in the attack on Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs’ camp in Dikwa, Borno State on Tuesday.
Two other teenage girls who were with her, however, strolled into the middle of hundreds of people lining up for food adn detonated the explosives on them killing 58 people and injuring 78 others.
It was the most destructive attack launched by Boko Haram in recent months.
Modu Awami, a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) fighter disclosed yesterday that the third would-be bomber should be about 14 years old.
Awami, who interrogated the girl, said she was afraid because she knew detonating the vest will lead to the killing of many people.
A rescue official who confirmed this development, revealed that the girl has given information to the authorities about other terror acts planned by Boko Haram.
Meanwhile, the United States (U.S.) Embassy in Nigeria yesterday condemned the attacks on Dikwa.

Nigeria Vexed by Boko Haram’s Use of Women as Suicide Bombers. As Suicide bombers kills 58 in IDPs camp

Nigeria Vexed by Boko Haram’s Use of Women as Suicide Bombers. As Suicide bombers kills 58 in IDPs camp

Fifty-eight people were killed in suicide bomb attacks at an internally-displaced-person camp at Dikwa, Borno state, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred while the displaced persons were queuing up to receive food rations. “It was a suicide bomb attack by three females. Two of the suicide bombers were successful while the other one was not. It happened at a camp at Dikwa, which is far from Maiduguri, while the IDPs were waiting to collect food.

The suicide bombers sneaked in and detonated the bombs,” he explained. “Dikwa is a terrible place. It will take time because these people (suicide bombers) are among them. The place is not accessible at all. Fifty-eight people lost their lives and 78 people were wounded.”

The suspect was injured in the attack and is now in custody, Ahmed said. The woman confessed that she and the two bombers were sent by Boko Haram, and she warned that more bombers were on the way, he added.

"She told the military officers who interrogated her that they were among several women detailed by Boko Haram to attack the camp," Ahmed said. "She warned more attacks were underway as the female bombers would sneak into the camp in different guises."
The attacks are believed to be reprisals for a recent military offensive against Boko Haram in its strongholds along the border with Cameroon, a military source said.
Last week, troops raided three Boko Haram strongholds, killing more than 100 fighters and freeing more than 1,000 people -- including more than 100 women kidnapped and used as sex slaves by the insurgents, the military source said on condition of anonymity.
The source said that the freed women were brought to the Dikwa camp and that Boko Haram terrorists "are pained by that, and hence their decision to send in suicide bombers in revenge."
Some of the women in the group of suicide bombers are thought to have been taken from villages by Boko Haram in previous raids and indoctrinated, Ahmed said.
