Done and delivered: Telecommunications giant MTN buys Visafone

  • Recalls over 2000 sacked workers

The MTN group has concluded the acquisition of Visafone Communications Limited, a Nigerian mobile phone company, Technology Times reports.

The South African group has received the final approval of the federal government, paving the way for MTN’s purchase of Visafone’s CDMA network. Regulatory approvals are required for the transfer of shareholdings, frequency spectrum and other licences granted by government.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved the deal in the last quarter of 2015. The acquisition is expected to increase deployment of broadband services across the country.

Also following the acquisition, MTN Nigeria has recalled over  90 percent of the 2000 workers previously sacked by Visafone. One of the sacked worker said on the condition of anonymity confirmed that almost all the sacked staff have been recalled and are now awaiting their new salary remuneration packages and work guidelines.

He said “When we were asked to leave, we were given only three months salaries in lieu of notice, which was not too good because some of us have put in five to 10 years of service.
