Members of the Nigeria Medical Association Rivers State Chapter staged a peaceful protest yesterday over the continuous abduction and kidnapping of doctors in the state. The doctors who turned out in large numbers with placards and laboratory coats walked all the way from Aba Road to Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.
Speaking to Info 247 Plus, former chairman of Nigeria Medical Association Ibitorukuemi Kurubo explained the purpose of the protest.
He said: "When people are sick or when women want to put to birth,we don't call on Nigeria Security agencies to do it for us. For instance Lassa fever is on. We are confronting it. Two doctors have died in the process, that is our job. We are trained to do it and we must treat patient no matter how deadly the diseases are because that is our job. Therefore security agencies must rise up and do their job"
"This peaceful protest is to send a clear message to the public that anymore kidnap, Nigeria Medical Association will take a far reaching decision. The doctors also stormed the Police headquarter to lay complains".
You will recall that 21 doctors have so far been kidnapped in Rivers State, 11 of them were kidnapped within the last few days, One died in the hands of the kidnappers while others were seriously injured after huge ransoms were collected
